Wallace Meigs

Wallace “Wally” Meigs, of Hingham, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the age of 96. 

Mr Meigs was born and raised in Brookline MA, and was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth (Wallace) Meigs and Dr Joe V. Meigs, the first chief of staff of the Vincent Memorial Hospital (now the Vincent Department of OB/GYN) at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Beloved husband of the late Patricia (Hobbs) Meigs. Loving father of Joe V. Meigs and his wife Susan of Wheat Ridge, CO., Rebecca W. Meigs of Cranston, RI., Stephen R. Meigs and his wife Leigh of Durango, CO., Sarah P. Meigs and Cooper Meigs of Medway and Falmouth, and Thomas M. Meigs and his wife Julia of Portland, CT. Cherished grandfather of Madeleine Meigs, Alec Meigs-Rives, Jackson Meigs, Sarah Meigs, Matthew Meigs, Anson Gagnier, and Alex Gagnier. He is also survived by many nieces and cousins. He is also predeceased by his sisters, Sarah Cody and Elizabeth Courtney.

Wally was born in Brookline and graduated from Brooks School in North Andover. He then went on to attend Trinity College in Hartford, CT., where he was drafted into The War. Mr. Meigs proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and the Army’s Air Force during WWII. After returning from his honorable service, he graduated from WPI in Industrial Management. He enjoyed ship model building and had an extensive woodworking shop for building, repairing, and inventing and he went on to patent multiple items of his own. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Whitin Machine Works and Morgan Construction collectively for over fifty years.

In his 20’s, Wally was a founding member of the Quissett Volunteer Fire Dept with all his Quissett pals. He grew up summering at his parents home “Hidden House” in Quissett and later purchased a home in nearby Gansett. All throughout, he shared his love of boating, clamming, fishing and golf with his family. He was also a member of the Quissett Yacht Club and The Woods Hole Golf Club.

He and his dear wife Pat, formerly lived in Westboro where they cared for their “Estate” of forty fruit trees, raspberry patches, blueberry bushes, and many other plantings. Together they nourished long-standing relationships with beloved friends and family.

After moving to Hingham, they were active members of the Hingham Yacht Club for more than twenty years where they cruised daily on their recreational made lobster boat, “Kestrel.” They loved tooling around the Boston Harbor Islands with family and friends.

He had also been a member of The Country Club of Brookline, The Union Club and The Chilton Club of Boston.

Wally was an active member of St. Johns the Evangelist in Hingham where he had been a member of the vestery and loved helping with the building and grounds committee. Wally was a cherished kind man who will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He loved life, his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 172 Main Street in Hingham, on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11 a.m. All relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A private interment will be held at the Hingham Cemetery with Military Honors.
