Stephen H. Whyte, 78, of Hingham passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on December 20, 2019. Son of the late C. Stanley Whyte and Helen Elizabeth (Hardy) Whyte. Devoted husband of 57 years of Carol A. (Irving) Whyte. Proud father of Cheryl (Whyte) Riihimaki of Maine, David Whyte and his wife Lynda of Plymouth, and Gary Whyte of Hingham. Loving brother of Carolyn Housman and her late husband Dick of Marshfield, and Donna Chisholm of Florida. Cherished Grumpa of Laurie, Stephen, Brian, and Jessica. Adored Uncle of Michael, Mark, Douglas, Lynn, Matt, Marc, Michele, as well as several great-nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Hingham, Stephen was a graduate of Hingham High School, class of ‘59, where he excelled in football. He was proud to be part of the undefeated team in ‘57. After graduating from Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, he worked hard for many years and remained a lifelong resident of Hingham, a true Hinghamite.
Stephen enjoyed sports, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his wife Carol. Grumpa loved watching his grandchildren perform on the ice, field, court, and on stage. His tomatoes and piccalilli were famous throughout Hingham, and those who were on his delivery route would anticipate their arrival. Countless mornings throughout his life he got up at the crack of dawn to test his luck on the waters, casting his line, and waiting for the big catch. Stephen was blessed to have a group of lifelong friends. Whether it was camping, vacationing, or just having a few Millers on the back deck, they always managed to have a good time. Don’t let the nickname “Grumpy” fool you, as he was the only one that their cat Sophie Mae would curl up with. Stephen’s personality was unforgettable. His wisecracking comments thrown from his favorite recliner will be greatly missed.
Visiting hours will be held at Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel in Hingham, Thursday, December 26th from 4-7 PM with a service at the funeral home on Friday, December 27th at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Research Fund, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215 (www.Dana-Farber.org) or a charity of your choice.
