Robert William "Bill" Vafides

R. William "Bill" Vafides 92 of Hingham, loving husband of Jane E. (Palmer) Vafides for 72 years peacefully passed away on June 13, 2026. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born August 22,1933 in Boston, Bill was the youngest child of parents Christos Vafides and Irene Deliandes. 

He is predeceased by his parents and 8 siblings, and Bill and Jane’s daughter Nancy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jane and 5 daughters, Carol Vafides (Denise Bylaska) of Hull, Diane Genovese (Charles) of Hingham, Susan Johnson (Jeffrey) of Hingham, Sally Wisel (Stuart) of Mansfield, and Julie Moran (Stephen) of Braintree. He is lovingly known as Bumpa by his fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Bill graduated from Hingham High School 1951 and UMass Amherst in 1955. He started his teaching and coaching career in Hingham. Later Bill moved to Braintree Public Schools where he taught Physics. He was head hockey coach at Braintree High School for 37 years.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday June 18 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel 21 Pond St, Hingham. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 19, 11:00 AM at the Hingham Congregational Church 278 Main St. Hingham. Burial will be private.
