Priscilla Wescott-Huber Obituary

Priscilla Alden (Duxbury) Wescott-Huber, age 100, a longtime Hingham resident, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2018 in her home in Hingham.

She was born on October 31, 1918 to her parents, Nena Oman Duxbury and Harry Duxbury of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Priscilla’s grandfather Charles Andrew Oman was a seaman aboard five whaling barks that sailed out of New Bedford. The Omans are descended from Francis Cooke, Richard Warren, and John Howland, who arrived with the Mayflower.

After graduating from New Bedford High School, Priscilla attended Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. Upon graduation with academic honors and elected to the Phi Beta Kappa  Society she married Robert Hayes Wescott, Jr., Captain USN Retired and they remained married for 45 years until he predeceased her in 1990.

Priscilla began what became more than just a career as she pursued her lifelong passions for the arts, education, and music. Priscilla loved life and had a very loving and generous heart. An extraordinary scholar, an avid tennis and piano player, she enjoyed the sun and taking long walks at nature preserves, watching the sunsets on Hingham harbor, singing to summer time tunes and singing Christmas Carols at an annual party she hosted for 25 years. Priscilla’s outgoing and caring nature gave her many loyal friendships which she cultivated throughout her life.

Priscilla nurtured and raised four children. Clay G. Wescott married to Alison of Naples, FL; Pamela H. Wescott married to Kathleen of Hyde Park, Thomas F. Wescott married to Holly of Martha’s Vineyard and Washington, D.C., and Jane W. Smith married to Bill of Hingham. Priscilla also leaves behind loving grandchildren Alec Wescott of Washington, D.C., Colby Smith of Hingham, Adam Wescott of Washington, D.C. and Sara Smith of New York City.

Priscilla’s family was her pride and joy.  She was an avid cook and baker creating celebratory cakes, pies and cookies for her family and friends. Priscilla taught by example the importance of a love that is both tireless and unconditional.  While she and her husband Bob raised their children in Hingham, Priscilla taught piano and was actively working on countless fundraising campaigns for the development of her alma mater Connecticut College. In 1949, she helped to organize The Poetry Group in Hingham, a group with 12 members who still meet monthly to enjoy and discuss poetry. Once her children were raised she worked for Wheaton College as their Director of Public Affairs and then Vice President of Development until retiring.

Priscilla thrived in life and persevered with great determination. She remarried at 80 years old and she is survived by her devoted husband of 20 years, Joseph F. Huber, Jr., Commander USNR Retired of Hingham who will have his 100th birthday on December 6, 2018.

Priscilla had a lifelong passion for travel and when she met Joe she found her travel soulmate.  From taking a paddle wheeler up the Mississippi to seeing the Fjords of Norway to Fiji, The Philippines, Bali and China.  And she made six trips to East and South Africa.

As a longtime member of the Hingham Yacht Club Priscilla spent many summers on the water under sail and power. Priscilla was a frequent volunteer with her favorites being fundraising for her alma mater and leading Boston by Foot Tours.
