Norma Jackson Obituary

Hingham – Norma (Hagman) Jackson passed away peacefully on February 22, 2023, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, she was 92.

Born in Winchester, MA and raised in Winthrop, she was the daughter of the late Martha (Southard) and Arthur W. Hagman.  Norma attended and graduated in 1951 from Simmons College with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  She attended the Harvard School of Public Health, continuing her education in Nutrition 1952-1954.

She began her career as a laboratory assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health in Nutrition until meeting the love of her life, the late Emmette G. Jackson, Jr. in Newport, RI during his Naval service.  They were happily married for 65 years.

They began their life together in New Jersey before moving to Hingham in 1957 where they raised their family.  Norma lived in Hingham until April 2022, when she moved to the Cape to be closer to her children.

Known for her infectious laugh and sense of humor, she loved to tell and be told good jokes, often laughing at her own jokes.  She loved being with other people and was active in many recreational and community programs. Norma was a tennis enthusiast, playing until the age of 80.  Her love of tennis lead to the position of Tennis Coordinator of the junior program at the Old Colony Tennis Club in Hingham.  Continuing her tennis path, she became Treasurer of the Hingham Tennis Club, which she held for many years. Other areas of interest involved Entertainment Committee of the Hingham Yacht Club, Board member of the Bradley Park Association.

Another passion was the game of golf where she held a championship title of the “Niners” at Cohasset Gold Club.  During the golf off season, she found enjoyment with her bowling group.  And her love for playing bridge cannot go unmentioned.  She would play that game with her wonderful group of friends at least three times a week and would be happy to teach the game to anyone interested.

Aside from her many interests, nothing made Norma happier than spending time with her family.  She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Emmette.  Norma is survived by her daughter Andrea (Jackson) Mullin, and her husband Rick of Dennis, son Steven Jackson and wife Madelyn (Ceriani) of Falmouth, and two granddaughters, Jennifer Jackson of Worcester, and Kristine Jackson of Woburn.

Visiting hours will be held from 2pm to 4 pm on Sunday February 26, at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham, immediately followed by a funeral service at the Chapel.  Norma will be interned at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, alongside her husband Emmette on Monday morning.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Norma’s memory to the Hingham Council on Aging, or The Bay to Sound Neighbors, South Dennis, MA.
