Lieutenant Commander Leslie Mears, long term resident of Hingham, passed away in Quincy on Monday, July 16, 2018. LT Mears was a 23 year Coast Guard veteran joining at the age of eighteen.
Leslie was born in Oswego, NY to Johanna (Piotraschke) and Ernest Mears. He attended school in Oswego with his brothers Ernie and Carl. In 1945 Les married the love of his life Ida Mae O'Brien. Ida nurtured their family while Leslie served as commander at four Long Range Navigation (LORAN) stations: Bodie Island, Ichi Hanare in the Japan Sea, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard.
Working for General Dynamics in Quincy was Leslie's second career. He enjoyed the shipyard for 21 years as a Senior Contract Administrator.
Les is survived by his brother Ernie Mears of Oswego, NY and his son, John Mears and wife Lillian Mears of Colorado Springs, daughter in law, Diane Mears of Rochester, NY, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceding Leslie in death are his wife of 58 years, Ida Mae, his brother Carl Mears and son Michael Mears.
A gathering to remember Les' life will be held at Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham on Monday, July 23 between 4 to 6 p.m. House of Prayer Lutheran Church will hold the church service on Tuesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception.
