Leo Flanagan Obituary

Leo Patrick Flanagan D.D.S. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on October 17, 2023 after a brief illness.

Leo was born in Lexington, Massachusetts. The son of Francis and Alice (Burke) Flanagan, he was raised in Lexington, Humarock, and Hingham. Leo is predeceased by his parents, his brother Francis “Buddy” Flanagan, his sister Barbara T. Johnson, and his brother-in-law Robert Galvin.

He attended high school at Newman Preparatory School in Boston, where he was valedictorian of his class in 1955. Leo graduated from Saint Michael’s College in 1959 and went on to attend Georgetown Medical and Dental School.

In 1967, Leo opened a private practice for dentistry and oral surgery in Braintree, Massachusetts, where he practiced for 50 years. Doctor Flanagan was known as a pioneer in oral surgery, as he was one of the first doctors to perform implantology in the Boston area.

Leo met and married the love of his life, Demetra Elizabeth (Connor) Flanagan of Hingham, in 1968. Leo and Demi settled in Hingham, where they raised their two daughters and had recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on September 28th.

Leo’s greatest joy in life was watching his eight grandchildren grow. He was a proud father and grandfather and loved nothing more than witnessing their academic accomplishments and athletic events. He was especially proud attending their high school and college graduations, as well as a law school graduation.

Leo enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, spending his time with his family, working around his house, exercising, and most especially, spending time on his boats.

Leo is survived by his wife Demetra, his daughter Melisssa Lanagan and her husband Matthew of Hanover, his daughter, Alison Guard of Marion and now Rockland, his grandchildren - Olivia, Makenzie, Matthew, Lucas, and Thao Lanagan of Hanover and Chase, Tucker, and Eliza Guard of Marion and Rockland - his brother Gerald Flanagan and wife Barbara of Kingston, his brother Robert Flanagan and wife Nancy of Ashburn, Virginia, and his sister Patricia Galvin of Green Harbor, as well as a number of loving nieces and nephews.

Private Services will be held on Friday, October 20 at the Resurrection Church in Hingham. The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers at South Shore Hospital who cared for Leo and supported them in his final days. In lieu of flowers donations may be made online to Hospice of the South Shore, South Shore Hospital Division or by mail to: Hospice of the South Shore 30 Reservoir Park Drive Rockland, MA 02370
