Joseph E Smith, 63, of Abington Massachusetts passed away on June 19th at South Shore Hospital after a short battle with colorectal cancer.
Born in Weymouth at South Shore Hospital in March of 1960 and growing up in Hingham, he was the second son of George H and Frances K Smith, who predeceased him. Joe leaves behind his daughter, Amanda Murphy, her husband Corey, Joe’s two grandchildren Alana and Camdyn, his brother George J Smith, George’s wife Joanne, their son Justin, and his aunt Patricia Condito.
Joe worked at Clinical Science Laboratory in Mansfield, MA for many years and truly enjoyed the work and the people he worked for and with. Joe enjoyed the simple things in life - time with family and friends, good food, talking with everyone he met and cars.
Joseph loved his family, and they loved him immensely. He not only loved his daughter Amanda but was very proud of her as well. Pictures of his granddaughter Alana were placed in several locations around his apartment. He attempted the same with pictures of his new grandson Camdyn; however, a life tragically cut short stopped him.
When Joseph's mother, Frances Smith, passed away, he looked to his aunt, Patricia Condito, as another mother figure. To say that he loved her hardly comes close to approaching how he felt. To say that his Aunt Pat loved him hardly does justice to the word "love."
Joseph and his brother George shared one trait common with all brothers. Although they could not agree upon some things, they each had a great love of family. He adored his sister-in-law, Joanne, and was also very proud of his nephew and godson, Justin Smith, as he was always impressed with his acting ability, the guts it took to do improv, and his writing talents.
Outside Joseph's evident love for his family, he was also passionate about cars and the Bruins. Joseph's specific car passion revolved around the Chevy Camaro. He believed if there was one car that embodied the true American classic, it was the Chevy Camaro. For hours he could talk about the Camaros sleek design, give you every statistic imaginable about its engines, and rave about superior handling.
As mentioned earlier, he had a New England sports fan love of the Boston Bruins. When most people were trying to decide which cable provider to use so they could stream movies and miniseries, Joseph had only one question; which package do I need so that I can watch the Bruins? As a typical New England sports fan, he was proud that the Bruins are one of the oldest professional hockey teams and have an outstanding six Stanley Cup victories!
Right about now, he has joined his mother and father in heaven. If you listen closely, you can hear Joseph playing cribbage with his father as the game is interrupted by his mother asking when they are leaving for Foxwoods Casino.
A private graveside ceremony will be held at St Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham on Friday.
