CDR John Andrew “Andy” Glutting
March 12, 1935 - February 25, 2025
John Andrew Glutting died last week at the age of 89 years old at his home in Hull. Andy, as everyone knew him, was the child of Barbara Blake Glutting and Paul Roland Glutting. His early years were spent in Boston and summers at Green Hill.
As the son of a Rear Admiral, he moved several times including living in Shanghai as a child. He attended St. John's Prep, St Michael's College and completed his education at the University of Rhode Island.
He joined the Navy and completed flight school becoming a helicopter pilot. He flew in Vietnam as well as a brief stint for Air America in Laos. He rejoined the Navy and retired as a Commander in 1978.
An avid athlete he enjoyed tennis and ran multiple marathons, completing the Boston Marathon at the age of 60. He was particularly proud of building his own home on family land in Hull after attending the Shelter Institute in Maine.
He is survived by his wife, Cyndie L. Glutting, his children Joan Hastings Glutting (Adam Briggs Gilsdorf) and John-Paul Glutting (Monserrat Rue), and his step-children Jesse Connolly, Kyra Connolly, Hannah Connolly. He is survived by grandchildren Jana Rue Glutting and Gloria Rue Glutting, John Hastings Glutting-Gilsdorf and Henry Russell Glutting-Gilsdorf and step-grandchildren Dahlia, Cora, and Penny Edwards. He is also survived by his niece Elizabeth Lord Glutting and by my many loving nephews, their children, as well as many cousins in the Gannon family. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Paul Glutting and Joseph Christopher Glutting, and loving sister Kate Arcand. Also predeceased by his sister-in-law Donalda Veal Glutting, and friend and brother-in-law Richard Arcand, as well as nephews Russell Glutting and George Glutting and niece Mary Elizabeth Taran. He is predeceased by his former wife June Roberts, the mother of his children.
A memorial will be held this summer at Green Hill. Donations in his memory can be made to the Boston Athletic Association (www.baa.org) to support the Boston Marathon.
