James E Lightfoot

James Emmert Lightfoot (also known as Bubba) was born on March 9, 1931 to James and Alice Lightfoot in Bradenton, FL.  He was the second oldest of four children from that union.

Before he left Bradenton at the age of 16 to join the Ringling Bros. Circus in Philadelphia, he fathered his first child, Gloria Edwards.  He left the Circus in the late 1940’s and eventually came to Boston, MA to live with his aunt Ada.  He met his first wife, Hazel White, in 1949, and from that union they had a son, James.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950, served two years and was Honorably Discharged.  Upon returning to Boston he divorced Hazel and soon after, met and married his wife, Ruby Fay Brown. From that union he had two children, Dennis and Cheryl.

Jimmy’s work history included driving a cab and pressing clothes for some 10+ years.  He left his pressing job and opened his own Bodega known as “Slim’s Variety” in Roxbury.  He also opened up a dry cleaning store, known as H&L Master’s Cleaners in Dorchester.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother, wives Hazel and Ruby Fay, sister Tommye Reed and niece Evonne Brown. He leaves to mourn his passing his children:  Gloria Edwards of Palmetto, FL, James of Boston, MA, Dennis (Karen) of Cambridge, MA, and Cheryl of Randolph, MA.  His sisters: Vera Corpening of Titusville, FL, Agnes Kirkland of Sarasota, FL.  Grandchildren: Melody Edwards, FL, Lahrod Edwards (Ingrid), FL, James Lightfoot, MA.  Great grandchildren: Jayquan Williams, MA, Semaj Jacks, MA, Valerie Aliva, FL, and Lahrod Edwards, Jr., FL.  Nieces and Nephews: Ethlyn Cash, MA, Brenda Cooper (Walter) MA, Joan, Jeffrey & Ronald Reed, MA, Brian Corpening, CA, Morris, Lyndon, Carolyn, and Doniece, FL.  He also leaves to mourn his passing, his life partner, LaVerne Williams, her son Donnell James, her granddaughter Danielle Ingram-James and his “Love Bugs” Jada, Jayana and Jayden Haygood as well as many other family members and friends.

Visiting hour will be held on Thursday April 20, 2023 from 10-11am. followed by a funeral service at 11am at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel 21 Pond Street Hingham Mass.  Burial will follow in Hull Village Cemetery, Hull MA
