Helen Goodwin Obituary

Helen Elizabeth (Knight) Goodwin, 87, of Cohasset, died August 29, 2018 following a long illness.  Helen was married to Gordon L. Goodwin in 1956 and they built their home in Cohasset where they raised their family.   Gordon predeceased Helen in 2003.

Helen was born July 14, 1931 in Cohasset and raised in Hull, MA; the only child of C. Ross Knight and Carolyn Williams (Howard) Knight.  Helen graduated from Bridgewater Teachers College in 1953 and taught in the Weymouth school system from 1953-1961.

Helen was a member of the 2nd Congregational Church of Cohasset.  In her younger years she was active in the Church Fair, Cohasset Garden Club, and Gourmet Club.  Helen also enjoyed her years as a Girl Scout leader from 1968 – 1979.

Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, crafts, and reading.  She also enjoyed traveling, including many years cruising the east coast on their boat the ‘Helen G’.  Helen’s greatest joy in life was her family; her husband, her children, and her grandchildren, all of whose needs she always put before her own.

Helen is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn & Mark Browne of North Grafton, MA, Sandra & Gerard Jette of Hudson, NH, and Susan & Andrew Willard of Cohasset, MA; her beloved grandchildren Scott Browne & fiancé Mariola Podpora of Millbury, MA, Laura Browne of Hancock, NH, and Eric Browne of Tiverton, RI.  She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law Doris Mock of Cape Coral, FL and Joan Redden of Sorrento, FL and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Those who knew Helen’s strength and determination know that having dementia would be an especially challenging way to end her life and we marvel at how well she managed with grace, dignity and appreciation for those who helped her.  We as a family are both saddened and relieved that this difficult journey for Helen has ended and that she is now at peace.

Helen’s family will be forever grateful for the excellent care that Helen received at Sunrise Living of Cohasset and from Hospice of the South Shore.  Her care givers were exceptional.  They were able to help Helen find moments of purpose, happiness, and affection even as she lost herself bit by bit.

Funeral services will be private.  Arrangements by the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, Hingham, MA.  Donations can be made in Helen’s name to: The Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice & Palliative Care Federation of Massachusetts, or a charity of your choice
