LARSON, Edith Mary (Sedgwick) Age 85, died at South Shore Hospital in the presence of her family on the afternoon of Valentines Day. She was the daughter of the late George and Alice Sedgwick of Berkeley, California.
Edith grew up in Berkeley, California. She graduated from Berkeley High School in 1954, and the University of California at Berkeley in 1958 having majored in English. She held a Masters degree in English from the University of Oregon (1966), and earned a doctorate in English and American Literature from Brandeis University (1981).
After graduating from Brandeis} Edith taught freshman writing courses at Boston University, Tufts University and The University of Massachusetts at Boston. During this period, she also managed to publish journal articles on the publications of Barbara Pym and the 18th century writings of Elizabeth Montagu.
Edith and her husband were both natives of California but long-time residents of Hingham where they were members of the Old Ship Unitarian-Universalist Church. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 63 Years Cal, her two sons Erik and his wife Margaret and their daughter Grace of Lexington, Ma., and Adam and his wife Kara of Hingham, Ma, and their two children Claudia and Calvin. Edith also leaves behind her brother Harold (Hal) of New York City and a childhood friend who was like a sister to her, Nancy Bartell of Berkeley, California.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff and palliative care women at South Shore Hospital for the kind and competent attention they gave to our beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend.
A celebration of Edith's life will be held on March 12 at 2:00 PM at the Old Ship Church in Hingham, MA.
