Hugh Miller of Boston, Massachusetts and Ashaway, Rhode Island passed away peacefully on September 7, just two months short of his 96th birthday. He is survived by his beloved family: wife Frances, sons Hugh and Christopher Miller, daughter in law Erin Miller, and grandchildren Margaret, Winston, and Hugh Thomas Miller.
A graduate of American International College and the Boston University School of Medicine, Hugh served in the Air Force after his internship. He was sent to Wright Patterson Air Force Base’s Aeronautical Space Laboratory, and helped to prepare the first astronauts for space travel by working on rocket sleds and gravity centrifuges.
He had planned to start medical residency in San Francisco after leaving the Air Force, but met his future wife Fran on a chance road trip to Mount Holyoke College ‘trolling for chicks.’ She was firmly fixed on working in Washington after graduation, so he altered his West Coast plans and took an internal medicine residency in D.C. They were married the following year. He often referred to their two years in Washington as one of the high points of his life, a time when a dynamic young President inspired the country to give its best, and to believe that all things were possible.
Hugh spent the third year of his cardiology residency at London’s Hammersmith Hospital, where he learned to love playing tennis on the grass. On return to the US he went into practice at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and joined the Longwood Cricket Club, where he could continue to play grass court tennis. In time he deserted the turf for clay courts, but his love for the game never diminished. As he grew older his cry of, “Yours!” from the doubles court was recognizable all over Longwood, at Boston’s Badminton and Tennis Club, and for fifteen post-retirement spring seasons at the Diamond Head Tennis Center in Honolulu.
Hugh practiced medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for more than 30 years, serving also as Medical Director for the New England Gas & Electric Company. During that time, he began honing a stone wall-building skill which blossomed into full passion after he retired. The many carefully crafted stone walls around his homes in Wellesley and Ashaway, anchored from behind and below with cement, stand as lasting testament to his artistry.
Any donations you would like to make in his memory can be made to your favorite charity.
