Douglas S. McCadam, 79, formerly of Wellesley. Massachusetts and Vail, Colorado, passed away at his home in Baja California Sur, Mexico on January 15, 2023. He was the son of Robert "Bob" McCadam of McCadam Cheese, Inc, and Jean McCadam Limric.
Doug graduated from Wellesley High School in 1961, and the University of Miami in 1965. After a short stint in a corporate job, Doug headed west and settled in Vail, Colorado. Together with his high school friend, Doug created DJ's Crepe and Omelet Shop at the base of Vail mountain in the mid-1970's, when development of the massive Vail Ski Resort was just beginning. For more than twenty-five years, Doug operated the restaurant which was a favorite of skiers, tourists, and locals alike, and was known for its fabulous crepes and classic smoothies, all created under Doug's watchful eye. An updated version of the restaurant is still operating in Vail today.
Over the years, Doug developed a passion for motorcycles, especially vintage Nortons. He loved taking long, adventurous bike trips from California to Florida to Lake Winnipesaukee to visit family and friends and attend motorcycle rallies. He created a business to restore and reconstruct Norton bikes which eventually became the well-known Colorado Norton Works Co. Whether he was constructing a bike from scratch using authentic Norton parts or restoring an existing model, Doug's commitment to excellence and attention to detail were always on display. Several of Doug's bikes have won awards in competitions conducted by Norton clubs and collectors. Doug continued his restoration and reconstruction work in Mexico and has rebuilt and sold scores of bikes
to Norton fans across the country.
If you ever crossed paths with Doug McCadam, chances are you'd remember the experience. If you were part of the Vail community in the early years, you'd have known a hard-working. easygoing thrill seeker with an insatiable thirst for adventure. If you were fortunate enough to ski with him in the Colorado mountains, you'd remember watching a uniquely powerful yet graceful force of nature seem to fly down the mountain in a cloud of powdery snow. If you met him at a motorcycle rally or worked with him on a Norton project, you'd have encountered a focused craftsman, passionate about his work and always striving for perfection. He was a true free spirit.
Doug is survived by his niece and nephew, Kendra McCadam Burge Cannoy and Seth McCadam, his stepsister Faith Limric Burbank, and sister-in-law Krisanne McCadam Burge. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother and sister, Robert and Barbara McCadam, and his stepfather and stepbrother, William and David Limric
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Doug's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
