Hingham, MA -- Donald Folsom Pitcher, Jr. passed away unexpectedly as a result of an accident on May 16, 2023, one day before his 85th birthday and a month before his 60th wedding anniversary. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Donald Folsom Pitcher and Roberta (Hardy) Pitcher. A life-long resident of Hingham, he graduated from Hingham High School (1956), Harvard College (1960), and Harvard Business School (1966). From 1960–1963, he was a naval officer on the USS Lowe out of San Francisco. He was a Senior Vice President and portfolio manager with Massachusetts Financial Services for 34 years before retiring in 2005, and was an early champion for women in the workplace. An avid sailor and quirky tennis player, he was a member of the Hingham Yacht Club, Hingham Tennis Club, and the Cohasset Golf Club. For the last 18 years, he divided his time between Hingham, MA and Bristol, ME, spending countless hours shaping his bushes one inch at a time. It was his form of therapy, a time to consider world and local issues. He gave himself the title of Master Pruner.
Don was an exceptional, caring, and loving husband and father and fiercely loyal to his friends. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hampton Pitcher, son, Donald Folsom Pitcher III of Great Barrington, MA, and daughter, Sara Hampton Pitcher of Boston, MA. He is also survived by his sister, Jane (Pitcher) Wheeler and brother-in-law George L. Hampton III, as well as 5 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews. Don was an outsized, larger-than-life presence in our lives and will be greatly missed. Burial will be private at the Hingham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/donate/memorial-giving.html) or the Hingham Congregational Church (https://hccucc.com/who-we-are/giving/).
