John R. Kearns (June 10, 1927-March 19, 2019)

John Robert Kearns, 91, of Quincy, MA, died March 19, 2019 at his home. Born June 10, 1927 in Boston, MA to Herbert T. Kearns and Mildred Emerson Kearns. John grew up in Hingham, MA and graduated from Hingham High School in 1944. Shortly afterward, he enlisted in the army where he served during World War II. After his discharge in 1947, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill, and attended Springfield College where he graduated in 1951. During the mid 1950's, he joined the civil service where he taught physical education to children of military officers who were stationed in South Korea and Japan. He returned to the United States in 1960 and was hired as a physical education teacher in the East Hartford, CT school system. He resided in Manchester, then moved to Hartford after he was married. 2 months after his son was born, John moved his family to Willington, CT. In 1966 he moved to Michigan where he taught for 3 years, then as his divorce was coming to its conclusion, moved to Dorchester, MA. He taught at the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr School in Boston, and also coached Special Olympics athletes. He had second residences in Hull, then later in Halifax. John was predeceased by his parents, his siblings: Herbert Douglas Kearns, Charles Emerson Kearns, and Katherine Elizabeth Kearns. He is survived by a son (Charles), 2 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Military commital services will be held on Monday June 10, 2019 (John's 92nd Birthday) at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
