Walter Bartlett Obituary

Walter J. Bartlett of Hingham, Massachusetts and Bealeton, Virginia, passed away while with family on April 7th, 2019. Born September 22, 1928, Mr. Bartlett had reached a milestone birthday of 90 years old, as well as celebrating his 70th anniversary of marriage to his wife, Dorothy M. Loring Bartlett on February 26th of this year.

Mr. Bartlett was born to Walter J. Bartlett, Sr. and Laura (Vickery) Bartlett in their house on Main Street in South Hingham. He spent his younger years working the family farm and attending Hingham Public Schools. As a teen, he ran cross country for Hingham High School and won many awards. Post high school, at the age of 17, he entered the Navy and served his country until the end of WWII.

Upon leaving the service, he attended Bentley College, where he earned a degree in accounting. He and his wife spent a short time in New York City before returning to Hingham, where, in 1953, Mr. Bartlett joined the Hingham Police Department. In 1963 he attained the rank of Captain, which he filled until his retirement in 1980.

Subsequent to his police career, Mr. Bartlett and his wife lived in Florida, Virginia, then New Hampshire, before putting down roots in Virginia where many of his family had settled. He worked hard all his life, but had diverse interests and hobbies. He earned his private pilot’s license at the age of forty, spent much time on the ski slopes of New Hampshire, and enjoyed camping, golfing and building radio controlled airplanes.

He was extremely active into his eighties, driving cars cross country for a Florida dealership, and spending time with friends and family.

Mr. Bartlett was predeceased early in life by his brother, Fred, and his sister, Elizabeth.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children, Gail Bartlett Carter and her partner James Burchill of Goldvein, VA, Laura Wight and her husband Jon of Hanson, MA, Judy Gagne and her husband Jerry of Etlan, VA, Susan Bartlett of Quincy, MA, and John Bartlett of Marietta, GA. He was the proud grandfather of Katy, Tawna, Kelly, Ashley, Zach, Christopher, Matthew, Aaron, Sarah and Shannen, as well doting on sixteen great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Liberty Plain Cemetery in South Hingham. An announcement will be made at that time for any who would like to attend.
