Renato "Ron" Gatnik

Renato Libero “Ron” Gatnik, of Hingham, born in Trieste, Italy in 1940, passed serenely at the age of 78 in Hingham on December 17, 2018 surrounded by his family.

Renato leaves his wife of 55 years Dolores, his oldest son Richard Gatnik and his wife Laurie, Joanne Gatnik and her husband Tom Nielsen, Robert Gatnik and his wife Anne, his youngest son Randal Gatnik, and a sister, Lori Gatnik.  He was the beloved “Nonno” to four grandchildren – Charles Gatnik, Lydia Gatnik, Isabella Nielsen and Julian Nielsen.

He sailed to the United States aboard the S.S. Andrea Doria in 1953.  He studied at Wentworth Institute of Technology and naturalized when he joined the United States Coast Guard.

As a veteran of the Boston Fire Department, he received several honors during his service. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to pursue many entrepreneurial endeavors including a successful business importing wine and food products from Italy.

Renato never missed an opportunity to have fun and to celebrate any occasion.  His interests were many from gardening to traveling the world – all of which he did enthusiastically and with great passion.

Extended family and friends all around the world will truly miss him.  He will always be remembered for his zest for life, genuine caring of people, his adventurous nature and his warm easy smile.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Old Ship Church, 90 Main Street, Hingham.   Reception immediately following at the Old Ship Parish House, 107 Main Street, Hingham.

Special acknowledgement for the outstanding care provided by the Mass General Hospital Cancer Center, Norwell Visiting Nurse Association and Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham.
