Mary Mapes Cox of Hingham, MA passed away on March 3, 2019 at the age of 90. Mary was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the third of four children to George and Sadie Marie Mapes. Mary’s brother introduced her to her husband of 53 years, Louis D. Cox, Sr. and it was love at first sight for both of them. With her late husband, a veteran of the US Navy, she lived in the South Pacific before settling in Massachusetts.
She was a graduate of Northeastern University and Lesley College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Masters of Science in Applied Management. Mary worked as a Manager for New England Telephone Company.
She leaves her daughter, Virginia Randall, and son-in-law, Alex Randall, of Hingham, MA, her son, Louis D. Cox, Jr. of Satellite Beach, FL, as well as grandchildren, Julia Randall and her husband Hector Vasquez, of Westborough, MA, Emily Randall of Hong Kong, Eric Randall of Los Angeles, CA, Andrew Randall of Boston, MA, and three great grandchildren, Alex, Sara and Anna Vasquez.
Mary’s greatest joy was spending time with both her southern and northern families. She traveled frequently to Birmingham to be with her beloved sister, Sadie Claire, and despite moving from the region at an early age, she never lost her southern drawl. Most recently, her great grandchildren brought joy, laughter, and a little chaos to her days. Mary loved to travel the world and into her later years, refused to accept limits in seeking new experiences and perspectives. She will be remembered for her loving ways and kindness to all.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 172 Main Street, Hingham, MA on Friday, March 8 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name may be sent to St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church or to the Perkins School for the Blind.
