Janet F (Folkins) Carter

Janet Carter of Hingham, MA, age 78, died peacefully on June 18, 2018  after a brief illness. 

Janet is survived by her husband of 56 years, Philip Carter of Hingham, MA, their three children and their families: John and Laura Carter of Windsor, VA; Andrew and Tracy Carter of South Weymouth, MA; Stephen and Laura (Carter) Welke of Fairfax, VA; sisters Barbara (Roy) Colmer of Leesburg, FL; Carol Pye of Marshall, VA.  She was the beloved “Gram” to Falyn, Daniel, Joseph, Alec, Anna, Becca, Cameron and Megan.

Born in New Britain, CT in 1940, she married Philip Carter at the Trinity College Chapel in May 1962 and they began their married life together in Hartford, CT. They moved to Hingham in 1973.

Janet devoted much of her time caring for her family.  She shared in her husband’s love of Barbershop music and considered herself his number one fan, joining him at countless competitions and concerts around the country during their marriage.  She was also a gifted homemaker and hostess who welcomed friends and family into her home with a ready smile and warm heart.  She loved to play cards and games with anyone who asked. 

She had a marvelous ability to relate to children of all ages and spent ten years of her life working with the Teen Parent Program of the South Shore Educational Collaborative.  She mentored teen mothers and helped care for their very young children while the mothers studied for their GED.  Outside of being a wife and mother, Janet was most proud of this accomplishment.

There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate her life at The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, MA at 10 am on Saturday July 21,2018, with a reception to follow at the church.
