James R. Barber, of Hull, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 73. 

James is survived by his loving wife Maria (Argos) Barber, daughter Christina Barber and her husband Michael McCarthy of Hingham, daughter Andrea Salzillo and husband Stephen of Norton, grandchildren Lily, Celia, Mario and Elena, brother Paul Barber of Arizona, brother Richard Barber of Texas and a loving extended family.  James was the ultimate family man, a devoted husband, a caring and supportive father, a fun loving papa, and loving uncle and godfather. James was predeceased by his parents Helen and Paul Barber and sisters Patricia and Eleanor Barber. 

James was born in Boston on October, 16 1944.  He grew up in Jamaica Plain (Boston) and graduated from Mission High School.  Jim or Jimmy, as many affectionately called him, spent summers as a boy in Hyannis Port at golf caddy camp, where he had the good fortune of meeting and caddying for the Kennedy family.  He and his family enjoyed many summer outings in the Brant Rock/Ocean Bluffs beach community.  He served as a member of the Air Force National Guard for a number of years.  Jim went on to graduate from Northeast Industrial Tech in Boston and pursued a lengthy and successful career with IBM and later Bank of Boston and State Street Corp.  Jim was a mentor and good friend to many people with whom he worked and carried these friendships/mentorships throughout his life.  He lived in Norwell, MA for over 30 years.  Jim enjoyed playing club tennis for a number of years at Mill Pond Tennis Club in Hanover, MA.  An avid skier and lover of the White Mountains and Jackson, NH, Jim spent much of his time on the slopes and earned a reputation for being the first person to arrive at the lodge in the morning, ready to go.  A member of the Attitash Mountain Ski Club TGIF (Thank Goodness I’m Fifty). Jim spent a great deal of his retirement and last year of life skiing and surrounded by good friends.  Jim was full of life, laughter and always enjoyed the company of his family and friends. 

Visiting hours will be held at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham, on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A funeral mass will be held at the Panagia Greek Orthodox Church, 811 Jerusalem Rd, Cohasset, on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 10 a.m.. Interment will be held at the Hull Village Cemetery.
