Thomas Burr Studley was born in 1922 in Hingham Centre and lived virtually his entire life within a quarter mile of his birthplace. As the 11th consecutive generation to live in Hingham, he was deeply immersed in the history of the town. He attended Hingham schools, played four sports at Hingham High School, graduating in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. Serving in the Pacific with a B-25 squadron, he earned the Presidential Unit Citation and 12 battle stars including New Guinea, Bismark, Coral Sea, Guadacanal, Okinawa, Japan and the Philippines. In 1945 he married his high school sweetheart Avis Hunt. He died January 15, 2018 shortly before their 73rd wedding anniversary. After his discharge in October 1945, he worked for the Hingham School Department for 22 years, then as a US Post Office mail carrier in Hingham for another 22 years. In retirement he worked part time at Hitchcock Shoe Company in Hingham.

They lived for 70 years in a house on Burr Road that his uncle built and he and Avis took great pride and pleasure in the maintenance of the gardens and grounds. He was extremely amiable and well-liked by everyone that knew him and had a great memory of the history of the town, especially Hingham Centre. Because of their popularity and involvement in the community, he and Avis were voted Hingham Citizens of the Year in 2007.

He is survived by Avis his wife of 73 years; son Michael and wife Christine of Hingham; son Robert and wife Claire of Yarmouth, Maine; daughter Susan and husband Robert Williams of Charlotte, North Carolina; and daughter Jane and husband Scott Farris of Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham, MA on Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 2-5 pm.
