Ross A Smith

With great sorrow we announce Ross Alexander Kusumadilaga Smith, of Hingham,  passed peacefully on March 19, 2017 in Hingham, Massachusetts at Linden Ponds, at the age of 92.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mia Smith Kusumadilaga; her daughter Chris Chin and her husband Jim Kenemuth of Palo Alto, California; and her son Ian Chin and his wife Shannon, of Poulsbo, Washington. He is also survived by his three sons by his earlier marriage– Ross Alexander Smith III of Portland, Oregon and his daughter Camilla and her husband Andrew Waldeck-Young of Broomfield, Colorado; Geoffry Lamar Smith and his wife Lay Guan and daughter Natalie Xin Qian of Singapore; and Carter Thorp Smith and his wife Elvira of Fall River, Massachusetts, daughter Abigail Whitney of Boston, Massachusetts and son Michael Alexander of Fall River, Massachusetts.

Ross was born in Ballinger, Texas on July 21, 1924, son of Ross Alexander Smith Sr., originally from Tennessee and Ada Estelle (Brown) Smith of Lampasas County, Texas who preceded him in death. Also preceding him were his two sisters, Frances Marie and her husband Walter Woods, and Ruth and her husband, Lennos C Norton.

After graduating from Abilene Christian College with a degree in chemistry, Ross moved to California, and after his Army discharge attended the University of California, Berkeley, studying sociology. He moved with his family to New England in 1969 and lived in Hingham more than 30 years. He was a long-time member of Old Ship Church in Hingham.

Ross will be profoundly missed by his immediate family, numerous nieces and nephews and his extended family in France, Indonesia, Italy and Singapore. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Old Ship Church, 107 Main Street Hingham, at 11:00 a.m.
