Lyle Weston Torrey Jr.

Lyle Weston Torrey Jr. of Hingham, passed away peacefully at home on August 6, 2017 at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by Elizabeth Carter Torrey of Hingham; son Matthew, daughter-in-law Amy, grandson Matthew Jr. and granddaughter Julia of Hingham; son Ethan, daughter-in-law Sarah, granddaughter Charlotte and grandson Ned of Chevy Chase, MD; and son Benjamin, daughter-in-law San San and her son Yemin of Malden. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Poemer of West Milford, NJ; her son Bob and wife Anne of Monroe Township, NJ; her daughter Joyce Koeller and husband Kerry of Hawley, PA; and her son Ken Poemer and wife Meg of Spruce Head, ME. He is also survived by his niece Laureen Aiello and husband John of New City, NY and by several grandnephews and grandnieces. He was predeceased by his sister Carol Smith of Suffern, NY.

Born in Waltham, MA in 1935 to Lyle Weston Torrey of Tenants Harbor, ME and Rose Edwards Torrey of Clark Island, ME, he graduated from Lodi High School in Lodi, NJ in 1953. Weston graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on scholarship and work study and took graduate courses at Columbia University and at MIT.  He worked at MIT's Draper Laboratories in Cambridge for over thirty-five years, designing guidance systems for the United States military and for NASA.

Weston had a lifelong love of astronomy, his grandparents' home on the coast of Maine, and was above all devoted to his family. He was an uncommonly kind and patient man, blessed with a wonderful sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held at the Old Ship Church, 107 Main Street, Hingham, MA on September 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

The Torrey family has made a donation to South Shore Hospice for its exemplary care of Weston during his last months.
