Welcome to the memorial page for

Carl Wilson Harris Jr.

July 2, 1940 ~ April 28, 2017 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Carl W. Harris Jr., of Hingham, died on Friday, April 28th, 2017. Mr. Harris was 76 years old and a 72 year resident of Hingham, MA.

Mr. Harris leaves very reluctantly. He was ever thankful that he met and married Susan Montgomery Harris who he loved dearly. He also loved dearly and is proud of his children:  Anne Watson Harris Mathey, Carl Wilson Harris III (Will), and Margaret Sumner Harris. As well as his grandchildren: Molly Mathey, Rosie Mathey, and a Harris grandson arriving in August. Mr. Harris also leaves four sisters who were a part of a life-long close-knit family unit; Julia H. Porter, Caroline Q. Baldwin, Lydia H. Harris and Susan K. Meyers.

Carl was born in Clover, VA on July 2, 1940 as the third child of five and only son of Carl Wilson Harris and Caroline Keene Harris. After a brief stay in the Washington D.C. area during the early years of World War II, the family moved back to Hingham, the birthplace of his mother Caroline Keene Harris.

Mr. Harris attended Hingham Public Schools, Lawrence Academy, and graduated with a B.S. from Marietta College in 1963. Carl was active in the Boy Scouts of America and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Harris also played (not very well) little league baseball in the first year of little league baseball in Hingham.

Carl had a wonderful time growing up (although there is some consideration that he never quite did that) in the town of Hingham which in the 40's, 50's, and 60's had a population in the 7,000-12,000 range.

Mr. Harris spent over 40 years in educational publishing where he worked for Prentice Hall, W.A. Benjamin, Allyn & Bacon, Butterworth, Addison Wesley, Kluwer Academic Publishers, and Springer in a variety of positions from Trade Salesman to Editorial Director.

Carl was particularly proud of his contribution to the field of Electrical Engineering through innovative publishing of advances in research and technology while at Kluwer Academic Publishers.

He was an active member of St. John the Evangelist and was a Warden from 1994-1998.  He also served Hingham as Chairman of the Hingham Republican Town Committee 1990-1998, Commissioner of the Hingham Center Cemetery Commission, and Vice President of the Hingham Community Center.  He served on the Editorial Advisory Committee for "Not All Is Changed: A Life History of Hingham". Mr. Harris was also elected a member of the Plymouth County Charter Commission in 2010 representing Hingham and Hull and was elected Clerk of that body.

Carl had a great life and thanks all those who knew him for their love, friendship, and forbearance.

A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main Street, Hingham on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. All relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A private interment will be held at Hingham Cemetery.
