I've only now gotten the news of Carl's death and, though we hadn't seen each other since college, I'll miss him as a Facebook link to happy times past. Carl was a steady ray of sunshine in the raucous DU house of the early '60s. A true-blue New Englander. My belated sympathies to the Harris family.

Dear Harris family,

My deepest condolences on the loss of Carl. I remember him fondly as a warm, friendly, and funny neighbor and fellow parishoner at St. John's. As a teenager I looked forward to his friendly banter before and after babysitting for Will and Margaret (the easiest job ever, btw - I think we just watched TV and threw a baseball around if I remember correctly). He'll be greatly missed. Big hugs to the whole Harris clan - I hope to see you soon in Hingham or Brooklyn. All the best, Luke

So sorry to hear of Carl's passing. Deb and I enjoyed the time we spent with the two of you, although there wasn't enough of it. I have great memories of funny comments Carl made and of the many acts of kindness I witnessed him perform.

I have known Carl for 40 plus years—initially in the 1970s as colleagues at Allyn & Bacon and then again in the 1990s when he was instrumental in my joining Kluwer for which I am forever indebted to him. Carl was the consummate publisher with tireless work-effort habits coupled with solid intuitive instincts. In everything he undertook, he made not only significant contributions, but better outcomes in all of life’s aspects from work to community activities and family. I was also fortunate to spend a number of occasions with Carl’s alter-ego, Nick. These were special occasions and are particularly fond memories. Carl was unforgettable and I shall remember him always. He was a special person and a good friend. I shall miss him and I can only imagine how deeply his family will miss this fun and notable husband, father, and brother.

Dearest Harris Family, I will be with you in spirit as you gather to celebrate Carl's life.
He was fortunate to have such a loving group to support him on life's journey .
You will have many found memories to reflect upon and smile because you hear the music that he liked or watch an especially beautiful sunset over the bay. Know that he is there with you.
fondly

Dear Susan and family: Miffy and I were so very sad to learn of Carl’s death. He was a wonderful man who we all liked and respected so much. Carl joined Kluwer Academic Publishers in 1983 during the very early days of the US expansion. He was the solid post in Norwell around which the rest of the publishing program was built. The success of the Norwell business simply would not have been the same without him. It is impossible to overstate his exceptional talent as a publisher. Very visionary, enormously productive and a mentor to everyone else in the office. His publications made major contributions to the fields of computer science and electrical engineering. He was admired by his authors and editors and commanded their loyalty and best work over many years.
It was my pleasure to have known him and worked with him. While most of my interactions with Carl were at work, it was readily evident to me throughout the whole time, his greatest love and pride were for you and your family.
We will all miss him. We have many memories to share and have already done so among his friends and colleagues.
Miffy and I send our deepest condolences to you and your family. Thank you for sharing Carl with us.

Dear Susan and Family,
Jeff and I were deeply saddened this morning to learn of Carl's death. Jeff will write separately of his work with Carl at Kluwer Academic Publishers, but my focus is on you and the children, as that is where my memories of us all lie. Our families were young and growing when we got to know each other, and we continued our friendship until they were off to college, and we had moved to Holland. I have thought of you many times since. I will write in the coming days. Much love, Miffy

Dear Susan and all family members of Carl,

We're both so shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Carl's death. We are so sorry for your loss and think of you all fondly at this most difficult time. I consider myself so fortunate to have known and worked with Carl for so many years. He was an exceptional publisher and a great colleague. I've never worked with anyone who was so hard-working and dedicated to his job. But he was also so much fun to be around and to enjoy a glass or three with. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a warm smile and an endearing heart. And he was so dedicated to his town and very giving of his time, service and support. I'm sure the Republican party will miss him sorely. He did lead a truly wonderful life, however short, but he will be truly missed by all of us who knew him so well. Jody and I are so sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,

Steve and Jody Dane

I only knew Carl when he was a fresh-faced lad, younger brother to my good friend, Caroline. We've been away from Hingham since then. I'm so glad that he lived such a long and happy life. I wish we could be with you on Saturday but I expect my brother, Charlie Berry, will be.

Dear Susan and Carl's extended Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. How fortunate I was to be able work directly with Carl for many years, first as my boss, and later as a close colleague. He was an inspirational mentor early in my career; to this day I attribute much of what I have been able to achieve to his teaching me the ropes, always with patience and grace. I can still hear him asking, "Have you called back that prospective author yet? "Is everything ok?" "Are you going to sweep the floor before you leave today?" He was the consummate publisher and a great friend during those years. I am sorry for your loss.
