Betty J (Johnston) Tower

Betty (Johnston) Tower, of Hingham and Mattapoisett, died suddenly at her home in Hingham on May 3, 2017.

Betty was born April 14, 1930 in Belmont where she grew up.  She met her late husband Arthur “Putt” Tower while working in Boston and they married a short time later on April 5, 1952. Betty and Putt lived in Hingham where they raised their children Putt Jr. and Steven. After 56 years of marriage Betty lost her husband Putt in 2008 and her son Putt Jr. in 2016.

Betty enjoyed an active life caring for the home in Hingham and the cottage at Antassawamock Club in Mattapoisett where she spent most of her summers through the years. Betty was a long time employee of the Town of Hingham, working in the selectman’s office until 2015 when she retired after years of faithful service at the age of 85. She continued to keep herself busy as a member of the leadership board of Second Parish Church in Hingham and doing volunteer work at the Hingham Public library. Her devotion to always staying busy and her commitment to family, friends and co-workers were unmatched.

Betty is survived by her son Steven Johnston Tower of Rockland along with grandsons Steven Tower Jr. of Rockland and Thomas A. Tower of Fairhaven. She also leaves nephews Jeffrey T. Hutton of Dedham, Arthur T. Moore of Seekonk, Alexander W. Moore of Tampa, Fl. along with nieces Nancy Moore and Meredith (Moore) Heath of Marion.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday May 20, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Second Parish Church, 685 Main Street Hingham, MA 02043. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. For those unable to attend the Memorial Service please feel free to join family and friends at Ames Chapel, 12 South Street Hingham from 1 to 3 p.m. following the Service.

In Lieu of flower, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to Second Parish Church. The interment in Hingham Cemetery will be private.
